BLOCKBUSTER BREAKING NEWS: Ohio State Drops Coaching Bombshell with Stunning Staff Shake-Up
In a massive offseason shake-up, Ohio State football has officially finalized its 2025 coaching staff, bringing in major hires and promotions that could shape the program’s future. With several key departures, head coach Ryan Day wasted no time in assembling a new-look staff designed to keep the Buckeyes in national title contention.
Matt Patricia Joins as Defensive Coordinator
One of the most shocking moves of the offseason is the hiring of former NFL coach Matt Patricia as Ohio State’s new defensive coordinator. Patricia, who most recently worked with the Philadelphia Eagles, is stepping into the role left vacant by Jim Knowles, who accepted the same position at Penn State.
Patricia, a Super Bowl-winning defensive mind, brings years of NFL experience to Columbus. While his tenure as the Detroit Lions’ head coach was rocky, his defensive expertise—honed over years with the New England Patriots—could be exactly what Ohio State needs to dominate on that side of the ball.
His arrival marks a significant shift in defensive philosophy, as he will be expected to maintain Ohio State’s elite defensive play while also adding his NFL-style schemes and experience to the program. His ability to recruit top-tier defensive talent will also be tested as he steps into the college game.
Brian Hartline Promoted to Offensive Coordinator
On the offensive side of the ball, Brian Hartline has been elevated to full-time offensive coordinator, replacing Chip Kelly, who left to join the Las Vegas Raiders. Hartline, a former Buckeye standout receiver and one of the nation’s top recruiters, has been with Ohio State for years, serving as wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator in previous seasons.
His promotion signals continuity and stability for Ohio State’s offense, which has consistently been one of the best in the country. Hartline has been instrumental in developing elite receivers like Marvin Harrison Jr., Garrett Wilson, and Chris Olave, and now he will have full control over the Buckeyes’ offensive scheme.
Other Key Staff Changes
Along with Patricia and Hartline, Ryan Day has made several other important staffing moves:
Billy Fessler will take over as quarterbacks coach, filling the void left by Chip Kelly. Fessler has previously worked with Ohio State’s star quarterbacks and has gained recognition for his ability to develop talent.
Keenan Bailey has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator, in addition to his role as tight ends coach. His versatility and strong reputation as a recruiter make him a valuable asset to the staff.
Tyler Bowen joins the Buckeyes as offensive line coach, bringing experience from Virginia Tech and previous stints at Penn State and Maryland.
Carlos Locklyn will continue as running backs coach, entering his second year in the position.
On defense, Tim Walton has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator, a significant step for the former Buckeyes cornerbacks coach.
Matt Guerrieri will serve as pass game coordinator, bringing additional expertise to the secondary.
Ryan Day’s Vision for 2025 and Beyond
Head coach Ryan Day has completely restructured his staff in response to offseason departures, ensuring Ohio State remains among college football’s elite programs. The combination of experienced NFL minds like Patricia and homegrown talent like Hartline positions the Buckeyes to compete at the highest level.
“Our focus is on maintaining a championship-caliber team,” Day said in a statement. “These changes reflect our commitment to winning and developing both players and coaches at the highest level.”
With these moves, Ohio State enters the 2025 season with renewed energy and a fresh coaching approach, setting the stage for another Big Ten title chase and national championship push.
