The New York Yankees are once again being linked to one of baseball’s biggest names, as trade speculation surrounding Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal continues to intensify ahead of a potentially explosive MLB offseason.
For decades, the Yankees have remained connected to nearly every superstar rumored to be available, and Skubal’s situation is proving no different. While the Los Angeles Dodgers may now carry the “Evil Empire” label in modern baseball, New York continues to monitor every opportunity to strengthen its roster — especially when elite pitching becomes available.
According to MLB insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Yankees are expected to remain involved in any potential trade discussions involving Skubal. However, the organization reportedly has no intention of sacrificing its top prospects unless the asking price becomes more reasonable.
“There really isn’t a need to trade their top prospects to land Skubal,” Bowden explained. “They’re not going to offer Carlos Lagrange or George Lombard Jr. for a rental.”
Despite that stance, Bowden added that the Yankees could still attempt to stay active in negotiations by putting together a less aggressive package centered around prospects Spencer Jones and Ben Hess.
The approach reflects how the franchise has operated under owner Hal Steinbrenner in recent years. Unlike previous eras where New York aggressively pursued every available superstar regardless of cost, the Yankees have become far more calculated with their long-term planning and prospect management.
Still, the possibility of acquiring Skubal remains intriguing.
The two-time American League Cy Young winner is widely considered one of the premier pitchers in baseball and would instantly become one of the most valuable arms on the market if Detroit seriously entertains trade offers. Any team willing to part with significant assets for Skubal would likely view him as more than just a short-term rental, especially given the expectation that he could command a massive long-term contract extension in the future.
At the same time, New York’s current starting rotation has shown encouraging signs when healthy. Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón are both back on the mound, while Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers have helped provide additional depth throughout the season.
Even so, concerns remain regarding the Yankees’ offensive inconsistency. Despite stretches of dominance, the lineup has struggled with prolonged cold spells, leading many around the league to believe the team still needs another major move if it hopes to finally end its franchise’s longest World Series drought in decades.
As trade rumors continue to swirl, the Yankees are expected to remain firmly in the conversation surrounding Tarik Skubal — even if they refuse to go all-in to make it happen.
