The Philadelphia Flyers have once again found themselves at the center of growing NHL trade speculation, this time surrounding veteran defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. According to recent reports from NHL insider Nick Kypreos, the Flyers could soon be forced to make a major decision regarding the future of the big right-shot blueliner as he approaches the final season of his current contract.
Ristolainen, who has frequently appeared in trade rumors over the past several seasons, reportedly remained in Philadelphia after the Flyers were unable to receive an offer that matched their asking price. At the same time, the organization’s surprisingly competitive campaign and push toward playoff contention made moving an experienced defenseman less appealing during the season.
However, the situation now appears to be changing quickly.
Kypreos noted in his latest trade board column that there is “little reason to believe” Ristolainen will re-sign with the Flyers once his contract expires after the 2026–27 season. That reality could force Philadelphia into revisiting trade discussions this offseason, potentially as early as the upcoming NHL Draft.
Turning 32 in October, Ristolainen is coming off what many considered one of his strongest seasons in recent years. The veteran defenseman played a key role on the Flyers’ blue line, using his size, physicality, and defensive presence to help stabilize the team throughout the campaign. His improved play has reportedly increased his market value around the league, especially among teams searching for experienced right-shot defensemen.
The Flyers now face a difficult balancing act. Holding onto Ristolainen for another season could help the team remain competitive, but it also comes with significant risk. If his performance declines or injuries become a concern, his trade value could drop considerably before the deadline. On the other hand, moving him now while his value remains high could allow Philadelphia to secure future assets, draft capital, or younger talent as part of their long-term plans.
Ristolainen currently carries a $5.1 million cap hit entering the final year of his contract. Any team interested in acquiring him will likely view the upcoming season as an opportunity to evaluate whether he deserves a contract extension beyond 2027.
With trade conversations expected to intensify in the coming weeks, all eyes will remain on Philadelphia and whether the organization ultimately decides to part ways with one of its most talked-about veterans.
