HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Huntsville police are investigating the shooting death of a woman at an apartment complex on Julia Street, according to officials.
Officers were called to the complex around 9 a.m. Wednesday. The Madison County Coroner ruled the death a homicide shortly after.
Jake Letson, a maintenance worker at a neighboring apartment complex on Julia Street, said he heard the gunshots and screaming before police arrived.
“I heard about 5 gun shots and a lady yelling for her life basically,” Letson said.
Letson said his manager called police, and they ran through a breezeway to see what was happening.
“Whenever they got here and ran up those stairs I knew there was probably something bad that happened,” Letson said. “Immediately they started to put caution tape up so I figured it was a death or something pretty bad.”
Officials have not identified the woman killed Wednesday morning, saying they are waiting until all family members have been notified.
Letson described the area as typically quiet and said he had not experienced anything like this before, but said the incident left him concerned.
“It’s still concerning though because there are a lot of people walking around,” Letson said. “I’m not saying they are bad people but you never know about people nowadays.”
Police have not announced any arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
