Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), in coordination with the National Park Service (NPS), local governments, nonprofits, and tribal partners, has released multiple statements and updates throughout October and early November 2025 addressing operations amid the ongoing federal government shutdown that began October 1. These focus on funding partnerships to maintain access, seasonal adjustments, and contingency planning.

On October 31, 2025, Sevier County announced an extension of funding to keep key park areas open through Sunday, January 4, 2026, if the shutdown persists. Partners—including Sevier County, cities of Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Pittman Center, Blount County, Cocke County, the State of Tennessee, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, Friends of the Smokies, Smokies Life, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians—committed to $80,000 weekly for basic services. This reduces from prior $125,000 levels due to winter slowdowns and furloughs of non-essential staff.

Friends of the Smokies emphasized prioritizing visitor centers, restrooms, emergency services, and popular sites like Cades Cove Loop Road. “Friends of the Smokies is proud to help fund staffing through the holidays so emergency services, restrooms, and visitor centers can remain open when visitation is high,” said President Dana Soehn. However, critical work like hemlock treatments and trail repairs pauses.

Earlier, on October 17, partners extended full operations through November 2, ensuring all facilities, roadways, and trails remained accessible. Initial funding reopened the park October 4 after brief closures of sites like Cades Cove and Sugarlands Visitor Center.

On November 4, NPS updated seasonal closures unrelated to the shutdown: Clingmans Dome Road closes December 1; Parson Branch and Rich Mountain Roads until November 9; Elkmont Campground November 30. Visitor centers at Sugarlands, Oconaluftee, and Cades Cove stay open year-round; Kuwohi closes November 30 as scheduled.

A November 5 update confirmed limited services post-November 2, with staffing focused on essentials. Popular areas remain accessible, but events like the November 9 Cades Cove Loop Lope proceed thanks to funding.

Separate statements addressed broader impacts. Former superintendents urged closures nationwide to prevent damage, but GSMNP’s partnerships averted this. Economic contributions—over 13 million visitors and $2 billion annually—drove support. Tennessee Gov. noted, “We’re making sure… come right on down, it’s going to be beautiful.”

As of November 13, the park operates normally under the agreement, with roads like Newfound Gap open (weather permitting) and trails mostly accessible except Helene-damaged areas. Officials urge checking nps.gov/grsm for updates and mid-December partner meetings if needed.
