Veteran Forward Markieff Morris Contemplates Retirement After Emotional Return—Lakers’ Locker Room Loses a Voice

In what could mark the end of a gritty and resilient NBA career, veteran forward Markieff Morris is strongly considering retirement following an emotional late-season return to the Los Angeles Lakers. After years of battling through injuries, shifting roles, and multiple team changes, Morris has reached a reflective point in his basketball journey — and the Lakers’ locker room is already feeling the weight of a potential goodbye.

Morris, 34, returned to the Lakers during the 2024-25 campaign, providing much-needed toughness, veteran experience, and leadership off the bench. While his on-court minutes were limited, his impact on the team’s morale and chemistry was deeply felt. Known for his no-nonsense attitude and unwavering commitment to the game, Morris quickly became a voice of accountability and passion within a Lakers roster looking for stability amid the highs and lows of a turbulent season.

Morris’ comments were met with admiration from teammates and coaches alike. Lakers head coach Darvin Ham praised Morris for his professionalism, calling him “the kind of teammate every young player should learn from.” LeBron James, who won an NBA title with Morris during the 2019-2020 season in the bubble, noted that “Kieff has always been the ultimate competitor. Whether it was five minutes or 25 minutes, he gave you everything.”

But behind the scenes, Morris has been grappling with what comes next. A persistent knee injury that flared up during the winter months sidelined him for several weeks, a sobering reminder of the physical toll his 13-year NBA career has exacted. While he managed to return to the rotation in the final stretch of the season, it became increasingly evident that Morris was playing through pain more often than not.

Morris’ career has spanned over a dozen years and included stints with the Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks, and two separate runs with the Lakers. Never a superstar, Morris carved out a legacy as one of the league’s most dependable enforcers and role players. His rugged style of play, combined with a reliable three-point shot and defensive versatility, made him a valuable asset to any playoff-caliber team.

As retirement looms, Morris is also reflecting on the lessons and relationships forged throughout his career. He credits his twin brother Marcus Morris — also a longtime NBA veteran — as a key source of motivation and stability.

If Morris does decide to hang up his jersey, the Lakers will lose more than just a player. They’ll be losing a battle-tested leader, a locker room presence who spoke up when necessary, and a mentor who bridged the gap between generations of players. His absence would be particularly felt among the Lakers’ younger talent, including Max Christie and Jalen Hood-Schifino, who both cited Morris as a mentor during the season.

As of now, Morris hasn’t made an official announcement. He’s taking time with his family this offseason and has stated he’ll make a decision “when the time feels right.” Regardless of what he chooses, there’s little doubt that Markieff Morris has left a lasting impression on the league — and especially in Los Angeles, where his grit and heart will be missed.
