Red Sox Extend Manager Alex Cora Through 2027 as…

The Boston Red Sox have solidified their managerial future by agreeing to a three-year contract extension with Alex Cora, ensuring his leadership through the 2027 season. This extension, valued at approximately $21.75 million, positions Cora among the highest-paid managers in Major League Baseball.

Cora’s journey with the Red Sox has been marked by notable achievements and challenges. Initially appointed as the team’s 47th manager in October 2017, he led Boston to a franchise-record 108 regular-season wins in 2018, culminating in a World Series championship. However, his tenure faced turbulence when he was suspended for the 2020 season due to his involvement in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal during his time as their bench coach. Demonstrating resilience, the Red Sox rehired Cora in 2021, and he guided the team to the American League Championship Series that year.

The 2024 season showcased Cora’s adept managerial skills. Under his guidance, the Red Sox achieved a 54-47 record by late July, surpassing many preseason expectations. This performance played a pivotal role in the organization’s decision to secure his services for the foreseeable future. Expressing his gratitude, Cora stated, “What this organization means to us is the world. They trusted me from day one, they doubled down on me in ’21 after everything that happened in ’17.”

The extension not only reflects the Red Sox’s confidence in Cora’s leadership but also provides stability for the team’s future endeavors. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow emphasized the importance of continuity, noting that ongoing discussions with Cora had been positive and productive.

Despite the midseason optimism, the Red Sox faced challenges as the season progressed. A significant downturn in performance was evident during a series against the Tampa Bay Rays, where the team recorded its lowest on-base percentage in a three-game series since 1909. Such struggles underscored the need for strategic adjustments moving forward.

In response to the season’s outcome, the Red Sox made substantial changes to their coaching staff. Six coaches, including first base/infield coach Andy Fox and bullpen coach Kevin Walker, were dismissed. These decisions reflect the organization’s commitment to revamping its approach and addressing areas of concern.

Looking ahead, the Red Sox aim to build upon the foundation established under Cora’s leadership. The upcoming offseason presents an opportunity to make strategic acquisitions and adjustments, with the goal of returning to postseason contention. Cora’s extension signifies the organization’s belief in his ability to steer the team toward sustained success.
