BREAKING: Reds lock in veteran stopper – José Trevino signs 3‑year extension today

BREAKING: Reds Secure Veteran Backstop – José Trevino Inks 3-Year Extension to Anchor Club’s Future

In a pivotal move that signals the Cincinnati Reds’ intent to build around trusted experience, veteran catcher José Trevino has officially signed a three-year contract extension with the club today. The deal, finalized on July 1st, ensures that the 31-year-old defensive standout will remain in Cincinnati through the 2028 MLB season.

Trevino’s extension isn’t just another transaction—it’s a clear vote of confidence in the veteran’s leadership, game-calling, and clubhouse presence as the Reds continue to balance the development of their young talent with postseason ambitions. While financial details of the deal remain undisclosed at press time, sources close to the team suggest that the contract includes incentives based on games caught and potential postseason success.

Since joining the Reds in a midseason trade from the Yankees in 2024, Trevino has quickly embedded himself into the heart of the team. Known across the league for his elite framing skills, ability to control the running game, and rapport with pitchers, the Gold Glove winner immediately made a positive impact in the Queen City.

In 2024, Trevino caught fire defensively—throwing out 39% of would-be base stealers and recording a career-high 12 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) despite playing in just 91 games. His presence helped stabilize a young and inconsistent Reds pitching staff, which posted a 3.71 ERA when he was behind the plate, a marked improvement over the team’s season average.

Though he’s not primarily known for his offense, Trevino delivered in key moments. He hit .247 with 6 home runs and 38 RBIs, providing clutch at-bats and often flipping the narrative in close games.

With a roster loaded with promising but inexperienced arms—such as Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and Andrew Abbott—Cincinnati brass clearly values the stabilizing influence of a veteran catcher who can command the game, nurture young pitchers, and set a tone in the dugout. Trevino checks every one of those boxes.

Manager David Bell echoed the sentiment, describing Trevino as “the kind of guy young players gravitate toward” and “a difference-maker in everything from pitch calling to culture.”

Trevino’s extension all but confirms Cincinnati’s faith in its current catching situation. Tyler Stephenson, once seen as the catcher of the future, has shifted into a more versatile role, seeing time at first base and designated hitter. With Trevino locked in behind the plate, the Reds are expected to deploy Stephenson as a right-handed bat who can provide flexibility across the lineup without the wear and tear of catching every day.

The Reds have quietly positioned themselves as dark horses in the National League. With a blend of youth, speed, and now veteran stability, they are aiming to contend in the coming seasons—particularly in a wide-open NL Central division.

The deal also allows the front office to avoid a future bidding war. Trevino was set to hit free agency after this season, and several contending teams were reportedly monitoring his availability. By locking him up now, the Reds avoid the offseason scramble and secure a key piece on their own terms.

The Reds’ extension of José Trevino is more than just a savvy front-office decision—it’s a declaration of intent. In a game increasingly defined by analytics and youth, the Reds are placing their trust in a battle-tested veteran to guide a new generation of pitchers and set the tone in the clubhouse.
