Tampering Tornado: Illinois Coach Accuses Kirby Smart of ‘Illegal’ Recruitment Over 12‑Hour Josh McCray Transfer

A brewing storm is forming in college football, and at the eye of it is one of the sport’s most successful figures — Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. The latest controversy centers around the brief yet fiery saga of Josh McCray, the former Illinois running back whose name was barely in the transfer portal for half a day before committing to Georgia. But that 12-hour turnaround has ignited serious accusations — including tampering — from Illinois head coach Bret Bielema, who is openly questioning whether Smart and his staff crossed ethical, or even legal, lines in acquiring the talented tailback.

Josh McCray, a 6-foot-1, 240-pound junior who showed flashes of brilliance in Champaign despite battling injuries, entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this offseason. Within mere hours, reports surfaced that he was heading to Athens. While that kind of speed isn’t unheard of in today’s fast-paced portal era, what raised eyebrows — and voices — was how quickly the commitment came, particularly considering NCAA rules require non-contact periods unless players are officially in the portal.

Bielema’s comments have shaken the already fragile structure of trust among Power Five programs, especially at a time when the NCAA is under mounting pressure to enforce tampering regulations that have become all but toothless in the modern NIL and portal era.

According to NCAA guidelines, coaches are not permitted to initiate contact with players from other programs unless those players have officially declared their intent to transfer by entering the portal. Violating that rule could be considered tampering — an offense that, while rarely punished, is explicitly banned.

But in a world where backchannel communications — often through “third parties” such as trainers, former coaches, friends, or even family members — are common, proving tampering is next to impossible. And that’s what Smart and Georgia seem to be counting on.

The Bulldogs have not commented directly on the allegations, but sources within the program say they are “confident” that no NCAA rules were broken. One Georgia staff member, speaking anonymously, defended the speed of the transfer by pointing to the program’s prestige and the appeal of playing in the SEC under a national championship-winning coach.

But for Illinois, the issue isn’t just about losing a player — it’s about what this says about the future of college football. If top-tier programs can scoop up portal entrants within hours, possibly with prior contact before legal eligibility, then smaller or mid-tier schools stand little chance of retaining talent.

This controversy comes at a time when frustrations over tampering have boiled over nationwide. Numerous Group of Five and even Power Five coaches have gone on record this offseason decrying a “free agent culture” that’s rewarding poachers and punishing developmental programs.

Bielema’s frustration echoed similar sentiments recently expressed by coaches like Matt Campbell (Iowa State) and Pat Narduzzi (Pittsburgh), both of whom have lost key players in similar fashion.

Coaches are being forced to recruit their own players 24/7,” Bielema lamented. We’re doing everything right — building relationships, developing talent, offering opportunity — and then someone with a bigger checkbook or better record whispers in their ear. That’s not college football. That’s chaos.”

As of now, the NCAA has made no public move to investigate the McCray situation, and realistically, few expect it to. The governing body has shown little appetite or capability to enforce tampering rules, leading many to view them as symbolic rather than enforceable.

Still, Bielema’s public stand may force a wider conversation — and possibly even a formal complaint to the NCAA, which could trigger at least a cursory review. Whether or not that leads anywhere is another story, but the pressure is building.

Meanwhile, Georgia fans are mostly brushing off the controversy, pointing to the Bulldogs’ tradition of dominance and scoffing at what they perceive as sour grapes from a struggling Big Ten program. On social media, Georgia supporters have dubbed Bielema’s comments a “tampering tantrum” and mocked the idea that a player would need coaxing to join one of the most elite programs in the nation.

But for many others around the country — especially those in smaller markets — this saga feels less like a tantrum and more like a warning. If the McCray-to-Georgia transfer is a sign of things to come, the line between legal recruitment and backdoor deals may become even more blurred.
