BLOCKBUSTER BREAKING: HBO’s Explosive ‘Surviving Ohio State’ Documentary Premieres June 17 — Sex-Abuse Scandal Returns to Spotlight, Pressure Mounts on University and Legacy of Athletic Greats

In a move that has already reignited long-dormant outrage and unearthed decades of pain, HBO has officially announced the premiere of its deeply anticipated and controversial documentary Surviving Ohio State, scheduled to air on June 17. The investigative series delves into the harrowing sexual abuse scandal involving former university doctor Richard Strauss — a case that allegedly spanned decades and affected hundreds of student-athletes at one of the most storied athletic programs in America.

The release comes amid mounting calls for accountability and closure, both from survivors and from the broader college sports world. Surviving Ohio State aims to do what years of legal action and university statements haven’t — confront the full scope of a crisis that has haunted the Buckeyes for over 25 years.

The documentary’s title draws parallels to other high-profile HBO works like Surviving R. Kelly, and from the early details released, it appears the network isn’t pulling any punches. Featuring raw, firsthand interviews from survivors, former athletes, and insiders, the multi-part series promises to peel back the layers of silence and systemic failure that allowed Strauss to operate with impunity from the 1970s through the 1990s.

Strauss, who died by suicide in 2005, is accused of sexually abusing at least 177 students, most of them male athletes, during his tenure at Ohio State. Reports from an independent investigation released in 2019 confirmed that university officials were aware of complaints against Strauss as early as 1979 but failed to take appropriate action.

Now, with HBO giving these survivors a national megaphone, many are wondering if the documentary could finally bring about the reckoning that Ohio State — and perhaps college sports culture as a whole — has long resisted.

Reactions in Columbus have been mixed. While many Buckeye fans are bracing for a painful reflection, others have accused HBO of targeting the university unfairly or sensationalizing the issue. Still, with several prominent Buckeye alumni now speaking out and participating in the project, the program is impossible to ignore.

Jon Vaughn, a former football player and a survivor of sexual abuse during his college years at a different Big Ten school, is featured in the documentary. He stated in a recent interview that “what happened at Ohio State wasn’t just one man’s crime — it was an institutional cover-up. And it’s time that institution faces the truth, without filters.”

Several former Ohio State athletes, including Olympic medalists and national champions, are also expected to appear in the series, describing their painful experiences and the long-term consequences of abuse that went unchecked for decades.

One of the most pressing questions in the wake of the documentary’s impending release is whether Ohio State will be compelled to take further action. Although the university has paid out over $60 million in settlements to victims and has issued multiple public apologies, critics say the responses have been half-hearted and designed more to protect the institution’s image than to offer justice.

Legal analysts suggest that Surviving Ohio State could lead to a second wave of lawsuits or even congressional scrutiny. Already, lawmakers like Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) have expressed support for further investigations and survivor advocacy.

This isn’t just about Ohio State — it’s about a systemic failure across college athletics where young people were failed by the very institutions meant to protect them,” Brown said in a statement following the trailer’s release.

The documentary is also poised to challenge the legacy of key figures connected to the university. Former OSU head wrestling coach Jim Jordan, now a Republican Congressman, has been accused by multiple former wrestlers of ignoring or dismissing abuse complaints during his time at the school. Jordan has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

His involvement in the scandal — and the fresh attention brought by the documentary — could potentially reignite political firestorms in Washington, D.C., particularly as election season heats up.

But perhaps the broader question is whether this documentary will finally fracture the wall of silence that has shielded elite college programs for so long.

As the premiere date approaches, fans, alumni, and critics alike are left to grapple with an uncomfortable truth: even the brightest programs can have the darkest corners. Whether Ohio State is ready to face that truth remains to be seen.
