BREAKING: Four-Star Running Back Amari Latimer Cancels Texas Visit — Redirects Focus to Georgia Tech

BREAKING: Four-Star Running Back Amari Latimer Cancels Texas Visit — Redirects Focus to Georgia Tech

In a notable shake-up on the recruiting trail, highly sought-after four-star running back Amari Latimer has changed his plans — withdrawing from an anticipated visit to the University of Texas and opting instead to make his way to Georgia Tech this weekend. The move has sent a ripple across college football circles, as Latimer had long been linked to the Longhorns as a potential top-tier commitment in their 2025 class.

Latimer, a dynamic 5-foot-11, 200-pound back out of Buford High School in Georgia, is ranked among the top running backs in the nation for the 2025 cycle. Known for his blend of power, vision, and breakaway speed, he had previously listed Texas among his top schools, with Austin expected to be a major stop on his summer recruiting tour.

However, late Thursday evening, Latimer’s camp confirmed he would no longer be making the trip to Texas as originally scheduled. Instead, he will spend the weekend in Atlanta, taking an official visit with Brent Key and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

This sudden redirection raises eyebrows, particularly given Texas’s strong track record in developing elite running backs for the NFL and their reputation for high-caliber offensive line play. Sources close to the recruitment say this decision wasn’t made lightly.

Latimer has family ties in Georgia and has expressed in the past a desire to make an early impact wherever he lands. At Georgia Tech, that opportunity could present itself sooner than in Austin, where the Longhorns boast a deep running back room and top-tier competition.

The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, are pressing hard to revamp their offense and make noise in the ACC. Landing a player like Latimer would be a major statement — both in recruiting and in the message it sends to other regional blue-chips.

Despite this development, Texas hasn’t been entirely ruled out. Latimer has not yet eliminated any schools officially, and the Longhorns coaching staff reportedly remains in steady communication with him. Running backs coach Tashard Choice, a former Yellow Jacket himself, had been spearheading the recruitment and is expected to keep pushing for an eventual visit to Austin before Latimer makes his final decision.

This is the time when relationships and playing time projections matter most,” said a national recruiting analyst. “Kids are being very intentional about visits, and canceling one like Texas for a school like Georgia Tech signals there’s serious momentum in Atlanta.”

Georgia Tech’s coaching staff has been on a recruiting tear in recent months, slowly building what many consider one of the more underrated 2025 classes in the ACC. Adding Latimer to the mix would immediately bolster that effort and could entice other offensive skill players to take a closer look at the Yellow Jackets’ evolving identity.

Latimer has praised the authenticity of Georgia Tech’s staff in past interviews, particularly their transparency about how they plan to utilize his skills in their zone-based running scheme.

For Texas, Latimer’s decision is a setback, but not a death blow. The Longhorns are still firmly in the race for multiple elite backs in the class, and their program’s prestige remains a strong lure for top-tier talent nationwide. Yet missing a visit opportunity with a four-star talent like Latimer — especially one they had prioritized — is a rare recruiting misfire for Steve Sarkisian’s staff.

Latimer’s next steps will be closely watched by fans, coaches, and recruiting experts alike. While Georgia Tech now appears to have the inside track, a lot can change between now and National Signing Day.
