Trev Alberts Launches Ambitious Financial Plan to Boost All Athletic Programs: “Every Sport Matters”

In a groundbreaking move set to reshape the future of collegiate athletics at Texas A&M, Athletic Director Trev Alberts has rolled out a sweeping financial strategy aimed at strengthening every sports program under his leadership. This bold initiative — built on the mantra “Every Sport Matters” — sends a powerful message across the college athletics world: no program will be left behind in the pursuit of excellence.

Alberts, who joined Texas A&M in 2024 after a successful tenure at Nebraska, has wasted no time making his mark. Known for his forward-thinking mindset and devotion to student-athlete development, Alberts is now turning his attention to financial equity and sustainability across all sports.

In a press conference that drew national attention, Alberts detailed a multi-faceted blueprint designed to channel investments into not just revenue-generating sports like football and basketball, but also Olympic and non-revenue sports that often operate in the shadows.

We’re not just trying to win in football,” Alberts said. “We’re trying to create a model where every athlete feels valued, every coach has the resources to succeed, and every sport has a legitimate chance to thrive. This isn’t just a slogan. It’s our mission.”

One of the cornerstones of the plan is a revised budget allocation system. Rather than allocating resources based solely on revenue output, the new model incorporates a performance-based and need-based approach. This means more balanced support for programs like track and field, swimming, softball, and tennis — sports that often perform at high levels but lack the financial backing of football and basketball.

Alberts emphasized that every athletic facility will be evaluated and upgraded where necessary. From locker rooms and weight training spaces to practice fields and stadiums, no facility is being overlooked. “Athletes in every program deserve a championship-caliber experience,” Alberts stated. “Facilities are a reflection of our commitment.”

A major component of the blueprint is engaging alumni and donors with a renewed sense of purpose. Alberts introduced a new campaign — titled “Aggies United for Excellence” — which aims to raise $250 million over the next five years. The campaign will spotlight stories from all sports to showcase the importance of comprehensive athletic investment.

Rather than short-term spending spurts, Alberts’ plan outlines a disciplined, data-driven approach to financial growth. It includes contingency reserves, performance incentives, and transparency metrics that will be reported annually. “We want Aggie Nation to see exactly how their support is making a difference — across all 20-plus sports,” Alberts said.

The response from within Texas A&M has been overwhelmingly positive. Coaches, players, and staff members say the announcement has breathed new energy into the athletic department.

I’ve been at A&M for eight years, and I’ve never seen this level of commitment to our sport,” said women’s soccer head coach G Guerrieri. “This isn’t just talk. It’s action.”

Gymnastics coach Jay Clark, whose program has battled budget constraints for years, was emotional in his response. “For years we’ve done more with less. Now, we finally feel seen. Trev’s leadership is going to change lives — literally.”

Football head coach Mike Elko also weighed in: “I know people think football drives everything — and it does play a big role. But what makes a university great is when all of its programs are strong. Trev gets that.”

While the blueprint is still in its early stages, experts around the country are already calling Alberts’ plan a model that other schools may follow. With increasing scrutiny on the fairness and ethics of college athletics spending — particularly in the age of NIL deals and transfer portals — Alberts’ strategy could mark a turning point.

Dr. Amanda Lewis, a sports finance analyst at the University of Florida, called it “one of the most comprehensive and inclusive athletic financial plans we’ve seen in recent years. It’s bold, but it’s rooted in sound principles.”

The first phase of implementation is already underway, with updated funding allocations expected for the 2025–2026 academic year. Immediate facility improvements for tennis, track, and volleyball will begin this summer, and the new donor campaign will launch officially in early fall.

Trev Alberts, never one to shy away from a challenge, summed it up succinctly: “We’re building something that doesn’t just serve one team or one season. This is about decades. This is about legacy.”
