Blockbuster Breaking: Red Sox Star Rafael Devers Fumes Over Position Shuffle—Unhappy DH Role and First Base Shift After Casas Injury Sparks Clubhouse Tension

Blockbuster Breaking: Rafael Devers Voices Frustration Over Role Changes—Red Sox Star’s Position Shuffle After Casas Injury Raises Clubhouse Concerns

Rafael Devers, the Boston Red Sox’s cornerstone third baseman and offensive leader, has reportedly expressed growing frustration with the team’s recent decisions regarding his defensive role. Traditionally anchored at third base, Devers has found himself uncomfortably shuffled across the diamond in recent weeks—first being moved to the designated hitter role, and now facing a potential switch to first base following the injury to slugger Triston Casas. Sources close to the organization suggest the uncharacteristic discontent from the usually composed Devers is starting to ripple through the Red Sox clubhouse.

The injury to Casas—who went down with a significant setback earlier this month—left a glaring void at first base. Rather than calling up a replacement or relying on existing depth, the Red Sox coaching staff floated the idea of shifting Devers across the infield. But the proposal has not been well received.

“Raffy’s not thrilled,” said one team insider who requested anonymity. “He’s spent years becoming the face of the franchise at third base. To suddenly be rotated to DH and now possibly first base, it feels like a demotion in his eyes, not a tactical adjustment.”

Devers’ defensive work at third has long been a topic of scrutiny. While his bat is undeniably elite—he leads the team in home runs and RBIs—his glove has had highs and lows. Still, his loyalty to the hot corner has never been in question. Even amid calls from analysts for a positional change to limit injury risk or defensive liability, Devers consistently expressed his desire to remain at third.

That makes this current scenario all the more jarring. After taking on DH duties temporarily, Devers reportedly hoped it was just a brief measure to allow rest. But now, with the first base proposition gaining traction internally, the 27-year-old’s patience may be wearing thin.

“It’s not about refusing to help the team,” the insider continued. “It’s about identity. Devers sees himself as a third baseman, and that’s how he’s built his career. Shifting that now, especially without clear communication, creates tension.”

Manager Alex Cora has publicly praised Devers’ flexibility and willingness to do what’s best for the team, but sources suggest those comments may be more aspirational than factual. Behind closed doors, Devers is believed to have met with team leadership to express his dissatisfaction.

Red Sox fans, too, are starting to pick up on the tension. While the team fights to stay competitive in a loaded AL East, any sign of internal unrest becomes magnified. Devers is not just another player—he’s the heart of the Red Sox lineup and a symbol of their long-term vision.

The timing of the position shift is also curious. With the trade deadline looming and Boston teetering between contending and rebuilding, some fans and analysts wonder if the move signals a deeper shift in strategy—perhaps even questioning Devers’ future with the club.

“If the Red Sox are really considering moving Devers to first base, they’d better have a plan,” said former MLB GM Jim Bowden on a recent broadcast. “Because if you alienate your star player without a solid backup plan, you risk unraveling the chemistry of the entire team.”

Teammates have offered subtle support for Devers. Veteran utilityman Enrique Hernández commented, “It’s a tough spot. We’ve got to cover for injuries, but we also have to respect what guys have earned.”

That balance—between tactical flexibility and player identity—now hangs in the balance. Boston is in a delicate position, trying to maximize performance without alienating its franchise star. The coming weeks could define the Red Sox’s season not only on the field but inside the locker room.
