Steelers named possible landing spot for embattled $180 million quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers took significant strides in 2024 by addressing their quarterback situation, bringing in veteran Russell Wilson as their starter. Despite missing the first six games due to a calf injury, Wilson returned in Week 7 and has since injected new life into the Steelers’ offense. However, as the season progresses, questions about the long-term future at quarterback in Pittsburgh remain unresolved.

Wilson’s contract expires after the 2024 season, making him a free agent. Adding to the uncertainty, his backup, Justin Fields, is also set to hit the open market. Fields is likely to pursue opportunities to start elsewhere if the Steelers don’t offer him a clear path to the starting role. While there’s optimism that Wilson and the Steelers will extend their partnership into 2025, nothing is guaranteed.

In light of this, some analysts, including Cory Woodroof of *For The Win*, have speculated that the Steelers might explore alternative options at quarterback, including Atlanta Falcons veteran Kirk Cousins.

Could Cousins Be a Fit in Pittsburgh?

Woodroof suggests that Cousins could be an intriguing option for Pittsburgh if Wilson departs in free agency. “If the Steelers don’t run it back with Russell Wilson, could Cousins be an ideal replacement?” Woodroof asked. “If Arthur Smith returns to call plays next spring, Cousins could be an ideal system quarterback for an offense with a heavy run game.”

Pittsburgh’s strong defensive unit and commitment to the run game could provide Cousins with a stable environment, something he hasn’t consistently had during his career. Woodroof further noted that Cousins and Arthur Smith, Atlanta’s head coach, might find common ground in Pittsburgh after their struggles in Atlanta.

Cousins’ Situation in Atlanta

Kirk Cousins’ future with the Falcons appears bleak after he was benched in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. earlier this season. Signed to a four-year, $180 million deal in the offseason, Cousins has struggled to meet expectations. Despite his benching, his contract remains tradeable, with only $27.5 million in guaranteed money left.

Atlanta is expected to explore trade options for Cousins in the offseason rather than releasing him outright. Considering the rising cost of starting quarterbacks in today’s NFL, Cousins’ contract could be seen as relatively affordable for a team in need of a veteran signal-caller. However, his underwhelming performance this season raises questions about his value on the trade market.

Steelers’ Options at Quarterback

For the Steelers to seriously consider Cousins, several conditions would need to align. First, Pittsburgh would have to lose both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in free agency, a scenario that appears unlikely but not impossible.

If that situation arises, the Steelers might pivot to trading for Cousins. Although he holds a no-trade clause, it’s reasonable to believe Cousins would waive it for the chance to join a storied franchise like Pittsburgh. The team’s strong defense, offensive system, and competitive aspirations could make it an appealing destination for the veteran quarterback.

Cousins vs. Wilson: A Strategic Decision

The potential shift from Wilson to Cousins would represent a strategic gamble for the Steelers. Wilson has proven his ability to elevate Pittsburgh’s offense since his return, showing flashes of the elite playmaking ability that made him a Super Bowl champion. However, at 35 years old, Wilson’s long-term viability is a concern, especially given the physical toll he’s endured in recent seasons.

Cousins, on the other hand, is also in the twilight of his career and has been inconsistent during his time in Atlanta. While he offers experience and a steady hand, his ceiling may be lower than Wilson’s, particularly in high-press Financial Factor**

Another consideration for the Steelers is the financial aspect of acquiring Cousins. With only $27.5 million in guaranteed money remaining on his contract, Cousins represents a relatively cost-effective option compared to other starting quarterbacks. However, his declining performance this season could make even that figure seem steep.

For Pittsburgh, balancing the cost of acquiring Cousins with his potential impact will be critical. If the team believes Cousins can thrive in their system and complement their defensive strength, they may be willing to make a move.

Conclusion: A Pivotal Offseason for Pittsburgh

As the Steelers navigate an offseason filled with uncertainty, the quarterback position will be their primary focus. While the ideal scenario involves re-signing Russell Wilson, contingency plans are necessary in the unpredictable world of NFL free agency.

Kirk Cousins represents a viable fallback option, offering experience and the ability to manage a run-heavy offense supported by a strong defense. However, his recent struggles and hefty contract make him a risky proposition.

Ultimately, the Steelers’ decision will hinge on their confidence in Wilson’s long-term potential and their ability to retain him. If the team can secure their current starter, they’ll likely avoid the need to pursue Cousins. But if Wilson and Fields both depart, Cousins could find himself wearing black and gold in 2025, seeking redemption with one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.
